The Global Health Body Sounds Concern Over Critical Lack of Obesity Jabs

Less than 10% of patients who could benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy can access them, states the WHO as it publishes its initial recommendations on the medications.

Given in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide now living with obesity, it is advocating for increased and just availability to these injectable treatments.

Per estimates, over two billion are projected to be obese by 2030 if no action is taken.

"The latest guidelines acknowledges that obesity is a chronic disease that can be addressed with comprehensive and ongoing treatment," stated WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, insufficient output, and supply-chain constraints are key barriers to broad availability to the jabs that can assist patients in reducing considerable body mass, notes the body.

GLP-1 Therapy Scarcity

Even under the present most optimistic scenario, the production of GLP-1 therapies could only cover around 100 million people – less than 10% of eligible patients, as stated by the WHO.

The advice urges countries and companies to increase availability, via approaches including voluntary licensing.

A patent on the active ingredient – the main component of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in multiple countries in 2026.

The Way Obesity Jabs Work

These medications mimick a biological compound to slow digestion, curb appetite and boost feelings of fullness so users consume fewer calories.

People typically see weight reduction within a few weeks of commencing the regular doses.

Research suggests patients may put most of the weight back on within a year of discontinuing the medication, because their typical hunger come back.

Being overweight or obese increases your risk for contracting diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and some cancers.

Obesity concerns individuals in all nations and was responsible for 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, as per the WHO.
