Space Traveler Discloses Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a public message, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the period after the landing.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was drowned out under the deluge of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after reaching space, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the supporters whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “You all saved me,” she said.

She added that amid the criticism, important benefits had resulted from the experience, such as increased focus on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of outer space.

The diverse crew also included accomplished professionals from different industries.

The company behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
